The 49 weather areas, town by town

Regions of Belgium

Over three hundred kilometres, Belgium's weather changes three times. The coast keeps the mildness of the sea while Hesbaye freezes; a shower that soaks the Herve Plateau leaves Gaume dry; it snows in the Liège Ardennes while it rains in Liège. These are the differences our bulletins name, and here is the map that goes with them: 49 areas, each covering whole municipalities.

The dark line on the map is the Sambre-Meuse valley: the natural boundary between Low and Middle Belgium.

    Key to the 49 areas

    What are these regions for?

A forecast that says "18 degrees in Belgium" tells you nothing. Naming the area says something useful: "ground frost in Hesbaye early in the morning", "showers on the coast", "snow above 400 metres in the Ardennes". Each area groups municipalities that get roughly the same weather, because of their relief, their distance from the sea and their altitude.

    And the altitude band?

Low Belgium below 100 metres, Middle between 100 and 200, High above 200: altitude, more often than latitude, decides between rain, snow and frost.

The areas follow municipal boundaries from before the 2025 mergers: a merged municipality takes the area of its former main municipality.
