Radar images: EUMETNET OPERA, the European weather radar network, updated every 5 minutes. Beyond « now », the forecast is calculated by Météo Belge by extrapolating the measured movement of the echoes (up to +3 h 30). Like any nowcast, it cannot foresee a shower that does not exist yet, and it becomes less reliable the further ahead it looks.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the images come from?
Over Belgium, the radar shows the official composite of the Royal Meteorological Institute (opendata.meteo.be), in real millimetres per hour and refreshed every 5 minutes. Beyond our borders, it combines the European radars of the EUMETNET OPERA network, under a CC BY 4.0 licence. The satellite layer is EUMETSAT's Meteosat imagery, updated every 10 minutes. These are real observations.
How is the 60-minute forecast calculated?
Météo Belge measures the actual movement of the rain areas between the latest radar images (direction and speed), then projects the latest image into the future along that movement. This technique is called « nowcasting »: very reliable for fronts and organised rain, less so for isolated showers that form and fade within minutes.
How often are the images updated?
A new radar image arrives every 10 minutes, and the satellite every 10 minutes too (with a delay of about fifteen minutes while Meteosat transmits).
Why is the forecast limited to 60 minutes?
Because beyond that, extrapolating the movement becomes too uncertain: rain cells change, strengthen or weaken. Rather than show a misleading animation, we stop where the method stays reliable. For later on, see our hour-by-hour forecast.
